Sustainable Building Practices in Urban Developments
As urban areas continue to grow and develop, the need for sustainable building practices becomes increasingly crucial. At Alderley Group, we are committed to integrating sustainable methods into our urban developments, ensuring that our projects not only meet the needs of today’s residents but also contribute to a healthier and more sustainable environment for future generations. In this blog, we will explore various sustainable building practices and highlight specific development sites where sustainable methods have been successfully implemented.
The Importance of Sustainable Building Practices
Sustainable building practices are essential for reducing the environmental impact of construction and creating energy-efficient, healthy living spaces. These practices encompass a range of strategies, including the use of eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient designs, and renewable energy sources. By adopting these methods, developers can significantly reduce carbon footprints, lower operational costs, and enhance the quality of life for residents.
Key Sustainable Building Practices
Eco-Friendly Materials: Using sustainable materials, such as recycled steel, reclaimed wood, and low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints, reduces the environmental impact of construction. These materials not only minimise waste but also improve indoor air quality.
Energy-Efficient Designs: Incorporating energy-efficient features, such as high-performance insulation, energy-efficient windows, and LED lighting, helps reduce energy consumption. Passive design strategies, such as maximising natural light and ventilation, further enhance energy efficiency.
Renewable Energy Sources: Integrating renewable energy systems, such as solar panels and wind turbines, into building designs reduces reliance on fossil fuels and lowers greenhouse gas emissions. These systems can provide a significant portion of a building’s energy needs.
Water Conservation: Implementing water-saving fixtures, rainwater harvesting systems, and greywater recycling helps conserve water resources. These measures are particularly important in urban areas where water scarcity can be a concern.
Green Roofs and Walls: Green roofs and walls, which are covered with vegetation, provide numerous benefits, including improved air quality, reduced heat island effect, and enhanced biodiversity. They also help insulate buildings, reducing energy costs.
Sustainable Practices at Alderley Group Development Sites
At Alderley Group, we are dedicated to implementing sustainable building practices across all our developments. Every site we develop is designed to be zero gas, significantly reducing carbon emissions and reliance on fossil fuels. Our recent projects, including Pomeroy Court and Povey Road, feature Photovoltaic solar panels, harnessing renewable energy to further lower the environmental impact. Furthermore, Photovoltaic solar panels will be included in all developments moving forwards. Additionally, we prioritise superior insulation in all our buildings; every site boasts a 150mm insulated wall cavity, surpassing the industry average of 125mm. This enhanced insulation not only allows us to meet our Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) requirements but also ensures that our buildings perform better in terms of energy efficiency, providing residents with more cost-effective and comfortable living spaces while significantly reducing overall energy consumption.
Explore additional ways we have integrated sustainable practices into all of our current urban development projects:
Povey Road, Warrington: This development features 45 one- and two-bedroom apartments designed with a fabric-first approach. High-quality materials and superior insulation have been used to exceed thermal efficiency targets, reducing energy consumption and costs for residents. The project also includes solar panels to generate renewable energy, further lowering the carbon footprint.
Hallwood Park, Runcorn: Hallwood Park consists of 27 one- and two-bedroom apartments in the heart of Runcorn, Cheshire, delivered under an affordable rent scheme with the partnered Housing Association, Onward Homes. Surrounded by lush greenery, Hallwood Park supports natural wildlife and includes Juliet balconies for residents to enjoy, as well as cycle storage and a car park with electric charging points, encouraging greener transportation.
Town Hill, Warrington: Town Hill is an affordable rent scheme delivered alongside the Housing Association, Torus. Located in Warrington, Cheshire, it offers 39 one- and two-bedroom apartments. Town Hill offers residents cycle storage, basement car parking, and a roof terrace to ensure they can integrate the outdoors into their living routine.
Pomeroy Court, Huyton: Pomeroy Court comprises 40 one- and two-bedroom apartments in Huyton, Merseyside, offered through a retirement living scheme for the over 55’s market. Delivered with the national Housing Association, Housing 21, Pomeroy Court provides residents with a car park with electric charging points, cycle storage, buggy storage, and communal areas for socialising, including external communal areas. These features support community building and a high quality of life, surrounded by soft landscaping.
The Vicarage, Warrington: The Vicarage is set to deliver 23 one- and two-bedroom apartments to the local community in Warrington under a Rent To Buy scheme, in partnership with local housing association Torus. The project includes communal hallways and staircases, cycle storage, basement car parking, and a roof terrace. These features ensure that residents can incorporate outdoor activities into their daily routines, enhancing their quality of life.
